| Twinning News |
Penzance Town Council recently welcomed St Just Town Council as a partner in the twinning arrangement with Bendigo, Australia and Nevada City, California. |
It was felt that St Just and Pendeen’s mining heritage and the fact that vast numbers of tin miners left St Just in the nineteenth century to join the gold rush in the New World, made the twinning far more historically significant to them than to Penzance itself. |
We have been interested to note that an area of Bendigo, St Just Point, was so named because of the number of residents who came from St Just. To this day, there are still a few of 1870-80 miners’ weatherboard cottages still standing. We are told that these cottages can still be recognised by their hip and valley and ‘kangaroo’ style roofs, though we have to admit we aren’t too sure what these are. Perhaps our Australian friends can enlighten us! |
As part of our efforts to put family members on opposite sides of the world back in touch with each other, we are engaging in conversations with the Older Peoples’ Forum in the hope that some people have long memories! If any of the residents of Bendigo and Nevada are reading this and can help, please do get in touch. |

| Report of the Councillors Commission |
| Chaired by Dame Jane Roberts, the Commission was set up by the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government as an independent review to look at the incentives and barriers that encourage or deter people from standing for election as councillors. It has potentially wide-ranging implications for the future of local democratic representation. Click here to download a copy of the report in pdf format. If you have any views which you would like the Council to take into account, please write to your Councillor or the Town Clerk. |
